Analysys Mason reports major shift in mobile broadband market
Analysys Mason has highlighted a "major shift" currently taking place in the European mobile broadband market, driven by the growing number of people who own multiple connected devices.

The research and consultancy firm noted that tablets are replacing laptops as the most popular means of browsing the web on the move, with Wi-Fi and smartphone tethering becoming favoured connectivity alternatives to mobile broadband services.

Due to this shift in consumer behaviour, the organisation has reduced its forecast for mobile broadband connections for the next five years, although it predicted the wider mobile broadband market will still enjoy "significant growth" due to the minority of tablets hooked up to cellular networks.

As more consumers take advantage of tethering to get online while out and about, smartphone data usage will increase, the report authors claimed.

They added: "The mobile broadband market may recover beyond the forecast period as wearable terminals, such as smart watches or Google Glass, eventually reach mass-market adoption."
