Broadband absent from many European homes, study shows
European Commission research has found 43 per cent of homes across the continent have no internet access.
The European Commission's (EC's) Eurobarometer survey found that 43 per cent of residences are not hooked up to the web, which the researchers said highlights the size of the challenge to get all consumers across the continent online.
Almost a fifth of respondents cited the high prices associated with the internet as one of their reasons for not signing up for broadband, while many stated they have no interest in being able to browse the web.
Despite this, the EC insisted: "Enhancing competition to get the prices down, an important objective of the Digital Agenda, would ... be likely to encourage more people to get an internet connection."
Meanwhile, a study published by the Office for National Statistics this summer found 19.2 million households in the UK have internet access.
This figure represents almost three-quarters of homes across the country.
