Consumers took advantage of their broadband connections to make a record number of purchases online in 2012, according to new research from BT and Fresca.

The organisations saw the greatest number of orders ever recorded through the Fresca Commerce platform (FCP) between December 1st and Boxing Day, with December 3rd - or Mega Monday - named as the busiest shopping day of the year.

On the day, sales rose by 410 per cent on levels recorded in 2008.

Across the year as a whole, purchases from the ecommerce platform surged by 17 per cent on 2011 and 300 per cent compared with four years ago.

The report also noted a high rise in the number of sales made in the evening via mobile devices, while the number of orders placed for Christmas using smartphones and tablets rose by an average of 125 per cent.

Richard Vining, BT Fresca's head of FCP performance, said: "We had a very busy Christmas period, where the Fresca Commerce platform handled 69 per cent more orders from Christmas Eve to Boxing Day compared with the same period last year."
