BT fibre broadband massively important, says campaigner
A Scottish Borders fibre optic broadband campaigner has said BT's pledge to bring high-speed internet to Innerleithen is "massively important".

Speaking to BBC Radio 1's Newsbeat, 25-year-old Andrew Fraser - who lobbied for local residents and businesses to vote for the town in BT's Race to Infinity campaign - said the technology will help the community to keep pace with the rest of the UK.

"It's massively important just to keep up to date," he remarked. "Everyone is online these days ... so it would be good for us to keep up and be a part of it."

However, people in the nearby town of Peebles told the news provider they have been given no indication if or when they will be able to enjoy super-fast broadband speeds.

BT has promised to invest £2.5 billion to roll out fibre broadband to two-thirds of the UK by 2015 and recently announced the technology will be available in 41 rural market towns by spring 2012.
