BT has announced that 199 locations across the UK will be connected to its new high-speed broadband network over the coming months.

By spring 2011, the telecoms giant is aiming to bring download speeds of up to 20Mb/s to more than 18 million homes and businesses throughout the country.

Over 55 per cent of British properties have already been upgraded to enable them to receive the faster speeds, with the latest round of improvements set to increase this number to 75 per cent.

The company is also currently carrying out work to connect a number of residences and business premises across the UK to its fibre optic cable broadband network.

Having announced plans to spend as much as £2.5 billion on this technology, BT is hoping to have connected up to 66 per cent of properties to the service by 2015.

However, it cautioned that this target is subject to there being "an acceptable environment for investment".
