BT signs npower deal to source 100% of energy from renewables
A new deal with npower will see BT source all of its UK electricity from renewable sources.
The broadband provider signed an agreement with npower as part of its Better Future strategy, which is designed to help the telecoms giant reduce its overall carbon footprint.
During 2011-12, the amount of energy used by BT to power its offices, data centres and networks stood at 2.3 Gigawatt hours - equivalent to 0.76 per cent of all electricity consumed in the UK.
Under the contract, npower has given a pioneering A-G rated energy source label to BT, offering an assurance that for every unit of electricity used, the same amount from renewable sources will be delivered back into the electricity grid.
Richard Tarboton, BT's director of energy and carbon, said: "BT strives to help society live within the constraints of our planet's resources through our products and services."
The deal is an example of BT's commitment to being a "responsible and sustainable business leader", he added.
