Many of BT's employees do not just work for the service provider rolling out high-speed broadband or communicating with customers in its call centres, but devote their free time to volunteering with various organisations too.

In the south-west, the achievements of these individuals have been recognised by the BT People Awards, which offer grants of up to £1,000 to groups it deems worthy of recognition.

Exeter Street Pastors has been awarded the full sum by the network provider, while Bournemouth Churches Housing Association has received a £700 boost.

Bideford Bay Surf Live Saving Club and Bridgwater's Lime Kiln Carnival Club are set to benefit from £500 apiece and £230 will go to both the 1st Crockerne Scout Group and the Cheltenham-based 637 VGS Royal Air Force Cadets.

South-West Regional Director for BT Jon Reynolds commented: "The People Awards acknowledges the time and commitment that BT people in the south-west are giving to the local community groups for which they volunteer."
