BT is being urged to beautify the street cabinets it installs to give homes and businesses access to fibre optic broadband.

National campaign group Civic Voice, which aims to make places across the country more attractive, enjoyable and distinctive, has argued that these structures are unsightly.

Vanessa Gregory, a Chiswell Green resident and member of the organisation, will be meeting with BT on September 22nd 2010 to encourage the telecoms giant to be more flexible with the design and colour of its broadband boxes.

Speaking to the St Albans & Harpenden Review, Ms Gregory explained: "We are not against broadband - I know it is vitally important for many businesses and very useful for people.

"But the boxes are huge ugly things and a blight on the street scene."

Actor and comedian Griff Rhys Jones was named as the president of Civic Voice in July, stating that he was "delighted and honoured" to have been appointed to the role.
