Business chiefs welcome West Yorks fibre broadband rollout
The launch of fibre broadband in Keighley, Crossgates, Hunslet and Dewsbury has been hailed by business chiefs in the area.
BT has rolled out the service to the first homes and businesses in the four communities, with more than 57,000 local properties set to be connected in the coming weeks.
The telecoms giant has previously installed fibre broadband in around 40 other locations in the area, including Armley, Knottingley and Pudsey.
Several other communities are set to gain access to the service in the near future, meaning that more than 659,000 premises are in line to be hooked up by the end of 2014.
Len Cruddas, chief executive of Leeds, York and North Yorkshire Chamber of Commerce, said the launch of fibre broadband represents a "significant step" for West Yorkshire.
"At a time when our local economy needs a much-needed boost, important developments such as BT's investment in super-fast broadband offer us the potential to create new opportunities, services and growth," he added.
