Campaign to help 7.5m more people access the internet launchedThe government is launching a new initiative to give 7.5 million more people home broadband access. ![]() The government has announced the drive, which will see the elderly and the less well-off encouraged to get online before 2014. Stephen Timms, minister for Digital Britain, has announced that the initiative is aiming to reduce the number of people without home broadband by 60 per cent in the next four years. He said: "Being online is crucial for participation in the 21st century society - the internet unlocks a wealth of information and services, giving people more choices in life and access to a range of education, health and financial opportunities." Mr Timms added that extending the number of people with access to broadband will enrich society and ensure that "no one is left behind". Earlier this week, the BBC revealed that a report from the Wales Rural Observatory has claimed that home broadband is essential for rural Wales and is one of four key areas of concern that need to be addressed to reduce the number of young people moving away from rural communities.
