Derby City Council signs up for Orange broadbandA local authority has signed a deal with leading broadband provider Orange which will see the firm provide it with web access, mobile internet and voice connections. ![]() Derby City Council estimates that it will save approximately £200,000 per year through the deal, those companies considering business broadband may be interested to discover. As part of the arrangement, the local authority will receive 1,500 voice connections, a virtual private network and the ability to use mobile broadband. In total, 500 3G dongles will also be in place for a number of schemes designed to allow under-privileged children to access computer equipment. Councillor Mike Carr said that the local authority is one of the first to use online reverse auctions in order to procure its broadband services. He said: "We selected Orange as it was the only operator involved in the process that demonstrated that it could deliver against all of our requirements and allow us to make significant savings." Earlier this month, eDigitalResearch predicted that upgrading the country's broadband infrastructure would offer benefits to everybody. Related Stories
