Ed Vaizey urged to back broadband speeds campaignThe culture minister has been asked to give his support to a campaign which aims to force internet service providers to give their average or typical broadband speeds. ![]() The Communications Consumer Panel has written to culture minister Ed Vaizey, calling for him to get behind a campaign to make internet service providers give their average or typical broadband speeds, rather than "up to" figures. It argued that consumers can be misled and confused by "up to" headline speeds and noted that recent Ofcom research showed the difference between these figures and the actual speeds that are likely to be received is widening. "We hope we can count on your support in underscoring to the industry the unacceptability of the current situation and the need for them to do more," panel chair Anna Bradley told Mr Vaizey. Virgin Media recently published a study which found that nine out of ten consumers find advertised broadband speeds to be misleading, while 94 per cent felt consistent information on this matter should be provided.
