First Go Digital Newcastle superfast broadband cabinet goes live
The first green roadside cabinet has been connected to superfast broadband under the £3.8 million Go Digital Newcastle rollout programme.

Network provider BT's Openreach engineers have upgraded the box to be able to receive the high-speed technology, meaning residents can now access significantly better internet loading speeds.

The switch-on of the cabinet was marked with an official unveiling, with local students in attendance alongside council representatives.

Cabinet Member for Investment and Development at Newcastle City Council Ged Bell commented: "We're delighted to be here to mark this significant step in the Go Digital Newcastle project."

The new fibre broadband cabinet - which is situated in Walker - will allow residents to access loading speeds of up to 80Mbps.

Over the next few weeks, approximately 1,400 residential and commercial properties in Walker, Byker, Manor Park, Elswick, Cochrane Park, Fenham and South Benwell will be connected to the superfast service, with Mr Bell promising "huge benefits" for all those who sign up for access via their network provider.

Altogether, there will be six phases of the rollout, with both urban and rural homes and businesses set to gain access to the technology.
