Government official hits back at BDUK criticism
A leading government official in charge of the nationwide fibre broadband rollout has responded to criticisms from MPs and the press.

The Department of Culture, Media and Sport's Head of Spectrum, Broadband and International ICT Policy Simon Towler hit back at claims the Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK) scheme will not be completed until a year later than the scheduled 2015 deadline.

According to PC Pro, he also gave his view on concerns the project is breeding a lack of competition in the broadband market by, so far, awarding every one of the 44 rollout contracts to BT.

Mr Towler said: "The current programme being delivered by BDUK and local authorities is going well, though you wouldn't believe it if you read the press."

He went on to praise the progress that has been made since the project was launched, reminding attendees at the Westminster eForum that superfast broadband has been introduced to more than 100,000 properties.
