'Great progress' being made with rural broadband rollout
The government has announced one million UK premises now have access to superfast broadband, with work continuing to roll out the high-speed technology across the country - even in rural areas.

While it has proved more of a challenge to deliver the service to homes and businesses in more remote locations, the government has been working hard to ensure people in rural communities are not left behind, as they would not necessarily be included in commercial rollout programmes.

Chief Executive of BT Gavin Patterson commented: "Getting fibre to rural areas is hard and often complex work, but we are making great progress."

For instance, undersea cables are currently being laid to the Outer Hebrides, which will allow those in one of the most remote parts of the UK to access better broadband.

Altogether, around 40,000 more properties are connected to the superfast infrastructure each week, meaning the government is on track with its target to deliver the technology to 95 per cent of premises in the country by 2017.

However, further emphasis is now being placed on bringing fibre broadband to the remaining five per cent, which primarily consists of rural properties.
