North East Lincolnshire Council has praised efforts to expand fibre optic in the region.

BT has recently announced that Grimsby, Healing and Scartho will benefit from faster broadband speeds, with more than 17,500 homes in the area upgraded in recent weeks.

Eventually this will rise to more than 31,500 - making Grimsby one of the most advanced small towns in the UK in terms of its internet access.

Councillor Darren Billar, Portfolio Holder for Finance, Governance and Support Services at North East Lincolnshire Council, said: "Broadband is an essential part of North East Lincolnshire's present and future. It's vital that we embrace this latest generation of technology in order for our local economy to remain competitive."

Tom Keeney, BT's Regional Director for Yorkshire and the Humber, also praised the news, stating that it will help both big businesses and small households to get more out of the internet than would be possible on slower connections.
