High-speed broadband coming to North Yorkshire Moors
Rural parts of the county are set to benefit from a new wireless broadband scheme.
The scheme, which the companies claimed is the second of its kind in England, will benefit more than 150 residents and firms in the Farndale area.
Under the initiative, a fibre optic broadband connection has been rolled out to Gillamoor School on the edge of the North Yorkshire Moors, with this web connection then beamed wirelessly to remote properties within a nine-mile radius in three directions.
This will enable locals to receive broadband with upload and download speeds of up to 6Mbps, with the potential for this to rise to 10Mbps in the near future.
Chief executive of NYnet David Cullen said: "Moorsweb is the second project in a series of community broadband initiatives that NYnet plan to introduce in rural villages throughout North Yorkshire in 2011."
The internet service provider won community project of the year for its work in the area at last year's IT Industry Awards, beating off competition from the likes of Virgin Media and the NHS.
