High-speed broadband services are set to be rolled out to more consumers in rural areas of North Yorkshire.

Around 150 residents and businesses in the villages of Newton-on-Rawcliffe and Stape, near Pickering, will get access to a broadband connection with speeds of up to 10Mbps, reports the Yorkshire Post.

It states that the move is part of a new community broadband scheme, which is the first project of its kind in England.

The service is being provided by NY Net, a joint initiative being run by regional development agency Yorkshire Forward, North Yorkshire County Council and Yorkshire-based company NextGenUs UK.

According to the newspaper, Yorkshire has the lowest rates of broadband access in the country with 64 per cent of people covered, compared to a national average of 71 per cent.

The news comes after the Communications Consumer Panel urged the government to ensure broadband services are delivered to any rural areas which the private sector is not able to cover.
