High-speed fibre-optic broadband coming to Shetland
Residents of Britain's most northerly community are set to benefit from a deal between IT services provider Alchemy Plus and Shetland Islands Council.

Super-fast broadband of 100 Mbps will be made available for home and business customers through a new state-of-the-art computing data centre to be built there.

The company hopes to make use of a recently laid fibre-optic cable linking the islands to the UK broadband network.

Neil Grant, head of economic development for Shetland Islands Council, said: "It is very satisfying to see such a multi-faceted project benefit from our past and ongoing commitment to delivering high-capacity fibre optic internet connectivity."

The scheme forms part of an ongoing commitment from policy-makers to supplying Scots with high-speed broadband.

Over the last year, the Scottish government's Broadband Reach Project has successfully provided over 2,400 households and businesses located throughout Scotland with a broadband connection to the internet for the first time.
