Mobile broadband will be active in one billion devices by 2016, a newly-released report has revealed.

This is according to the UMTS Forum - which promotes mobile broadband evolution - as it noted one billion Consumer Electronics (CE) devices will be connected by this time.

UMTS Forum chairman Jean-Pierre Bienaime observed: "The future growth of the mobile communications and CE industries are intrinsically linked."

He added he expects to see the development of "always-on devices" to become a more cost-effective process in the future, noting gaming consoles and ereaders will see increased sales over the next five years.

Bienaime remarked it is time for operators "to look beyond connectivity and access models" and try to play a bigger part in the whole experience.

The study also discovered that Wi-Fi is set to remain the "dominant access technology" for people in their houses, while cloud- and media server-based solutions are set to co-exist.
