Next-generation broadband roll-out plans welcomed
Plans to speed up the roll-out of superfast fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) broadband in Britain and the rest of Europe have been welcomed by an industry body.

The FTTH Council Europe is pleased with the European Commission's (EC) New Digital Agenda, which promises to ensure half of Europe's homes are connected to superfast broadband of speeds in excess of 100 Mbps by 2020.

Chris Holden, president of the FTTH Council Europe, said: "The European Digital Agenda is a first step in the right direction.

"By setting a clear bandwidth target, the European Commission clearly supports the roll-out of future-proof networks that offer more than 100 Mbps to each customer."

However, a lot of challenges remain in order to achieve this target, he added.

Roger Webster, managing director of fibre-optic specialists Webro Cables and Connectors, recently raised similar concerns about UK broadband.

He warned that the slow uptake of fibre technology means major investment is needed quickly to prevent serious bottlenecks appearing in the system.
