Oswestry mayor criticises delay of fast broadband rollout
The mayor of Oswestry is disappointed that super-fast broadband will not be arriving as quickly as had been hoped.
BT had originally placed its broadband cabinet in Festival Square, but councillors complained that it was unsuitable in a conservation area, the Shropshire Star reports.
The service provider then proposed to place the cabinet outside the Natwest bank building, but the bank has now said it does not want the equipment so close to its premises.
Consequently, BT has been forced to put its plans on hold while a suitable site is decided upon.
Mayor Martin Bennett said at a recent meeting on the matter: "What effect does this have on the introduction of super-fast broadband for Oswestry?"
He pointed out that if the cabinet has to be moved to a less central location, residents living too far away from it will only be able to get basic broadband and not the faster version they have been looking forward to.
BT insisted it is working hard to find an alternative location nearby.
It comes after the service provider announced that north Wales will become the first region in the country to benefit from its £425 million super-fast broadband rollout.
