Point Topic calls for less focus on speed in broadband targets

Policymakers should be more concerned with overall user experience and less with the top speed of broadband packages, according to Point Topic.
Point Topic calls for less focus on speed in broadband targets
Research group Point Topic has suggested more focus is needed on the end user experience when assessing broadband speeds across the UK and Europe, suggesting that concentrating on top speeds can lead to a misleading picture of how advanced a country's infrastructure actually is.

Tim Johnson, chief analyst at the firm, expressed this opinion when speaking at the quarterly Broadband Forum meeting in Bucharest.

He added: "While politicians may boast of having the fastest internet in Europe," some 3.4 million British homes can't reach average speed of 2 Mbps.

The focus should be on good quality of service rather than on initially impressive headline speeds, argued the analyst.

Official targets can often ignore the performance of specific and often crucial technologies such as video calls across multiple super-fast networks, concluded Mr Johnson.

This follows the claim from culture secretary Jeremy Hunt that the UK can have Europe's quickest broadband infrastructure by 2015, a suggestion that was refuted by several pundits.
