BT has announced that 2,800 homes and businesses are set to benefit from a rollout of fibre optic broadband.

The telecoms company said its collaboration with Angus Council and the Scottish government means that the number of premises with superfast broadband will more than double from its current level of 1,200.

Graeme Dey, MSP for Angus South, welcomed the news and said it will benefit local residents and businesses.

Mike Weir, UK MP for Angus also commended BT's investment in infrastructure, stating: "The arrival of fibre broadband means local people and firms can do more online at faster speeds and on multiple devices. This is great news for Kirriemuir."

BT is investing £126 million in fibre optic broadband across Scotland and aims to have 85 per cent of premises in the country hooked up to superfast connections by the end of 2015 - rising to 95 per cent in 2017.
