Superfast broadband goes live in Prestwick
BT has announced the arrival of new superfast broadband in Prestwick, Scotland.

More than 5,000 homes and businesses in the Ayrshire town now have access to the infrastructure, although this is expected to increase to more than 6,300 as BT engineers work to improve exchanges.

Brian Donohoe, MP for Central Ayrshire, was one of the first to welcome the announcement - predicting that "better, faster communications help businesses to grow and stimulate job creation."

Brendan Dick, BT Scotland director, also welcomed the news, stating: "more than 2.4 million homes and businesses across the UK are already using Openreach's new fibre network via a range of retailers."

Executives at BT have repeatedly insisted their priority in the UK market is expanding its fibre optic network so that more of its customers have access to the premium product.

However, some critics claim progress is too slow and that Britain is falling behind some of its Scandinavian and Far Eastern partners in this regard.
