Consumers are unwilling to embrace new technological concepts, such as so-called smart homes, possibly due to a lack of access to superfast broadband, according to new research.

Marketing Week reports it has seen the results of a new survey involving 2,000 adults from the UK, which revealed one-quarter (27 per cent) of respondents said they would not invest in a connected appliance, with 45 per cent of these stating this was due to cost concerns.

However, marketing agency Gekko believes this is not necessarily due to unwillingness to embrace change or money worries, but rather because people do not have adequate basic internet connections.

Group Managing Director of Gekko Daniel Todaro explained: "The government is woefully behind on superfast broadband. Most homes in the UK don't yet have the necessary speed of broadband to have a connected home."

In light of this, it seems the government may have to go 'back to basics' and ensure all residential properties can access high-speed broadband before they consider investing in new ideas related to smart homes.
