People using leading broadband provider TalkTalk will soon be able to benefit from higher speeds as the company rolls out a new Gbit ethernet fibre between its exchanges.

The group has announced that it is working on the £10 million to £20 million final phase of upgrading its backhaul network, which it describes as the equivalent of building the M1 motorway.

"As people increasingly use the internet to view rich media content, ISPs have struggled to balance the ballooning infrastructure cost with the need to offer compelling propositions in an ever competitive market," director of product management Alex Hollingdale explained.

He revealed that the new network should speed up home broadband for TalkTalk customers, allowing them to reach speeds of up to 24Mbps.

At the end of last month, leading broadband provider Virgin Media announced that it had launched a 100Mb deal, which is 24 times faster than the average connection speed.
