Virgin Media highlights importance of business broadband

Broadband
technology is now as important to UK businesses as the national rail and road networks, it has been claimed.

In a new study conducted by Virgin Media Business, the firm found that roughly a third of the 5,000 companies surveyed said high-speed internet was most crucial to their operations.

Companies based in London were seen to be particularly reliant upon web technologies, with 40 per cent saying improved business broadband would boost their profits.

This compared to the 24 per cent who called for improvements to the capital's transport network, in order to help them boost turnover.

Andrew McGrath, executive director at Virgin Media Business, commented: "Global figureheads from prime ministers to leading business owners have identified better communications infrastructure as the linchpin for improving the global economy.

"This survey highlights that the issue is still at the forefront of the boardroom agenda, and shows the very real need for businesses to step away from legacy infrastructure towards a faster future."

With this in mind, the government's recent decision to delay the national rollout of 2Mbps broadband technology from 2012 to 2015 will have come as a disappointment to many companies.
