Virgin Media 'to trial superfast broadband over telegraph poles'Superfast broadband could soon be deliverable through telegraph poles following trials of a new technology by Virgin Media. ![]() The company is to test whether it can offer 50Mb broadband to the village of Woolhampton, Berkshire, in this way. It will run for six months and, if successful, Virgin Media hopes this will allow it to roll out this technology across the country's rural areas. Neil Berkett, chief executive officer of the company, claimed that the growing demand for reliable, high-speed home connections from applications such as BBC iPlayer and YouTube will require new ways of delivering these services to be devised. He said: "This unique trial will allow us to understand the possibilities of aerial deployment and may provide an exciting new way to extend next generation broadband services." Last month, Virgin Media announced that it is to launch a 100Mb broadband deal in the UK, which is 24 times faster than the average connection. Related Stories
