Vodafone to provide PS Vita users with 3G connectivity
Sony has chosen Vodafone to offer 3G mobile broadband services for PS Vita users.
Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) explained the Wi-Fi and 3G-enabled version of the handheld device sold in selected countries will be shipped with a Vodafone sim card, allowing users to immediately enjoy social gaming while they are out and about.
This model of the PS Vita will be on sale from Vodafone's own retail channels. Customers who connect their consoles to the web with Vodafone will receive a PlayStation Network voucher allowing them to download WipEout 2048.
Consumers will be able to get their hands on the gadget from February 22nd 2012.
Patrick Chomet, Vodafone's group terminals director, said the carrier is eager for its customers to have the best possible choice of devices and described the PS Vita as a "great addition" to its range.
"We know from our application downloads that games are hugely popular with our customers, so we're delighted to be SCEE's preferred connectivity partner for 3G Vita devices sold across Europe and other selected regional markets," he explained.
Mr Chomet claimed using the console over Vodafone's extensive high-speed 3G mobile broadband network will provide owners with a "reliable 'anywhere anytime' dimension to gaming".
President and chief executive of SCEE Jim Ryan stated it was important for the tech giant to team up with a "market-leading" network provider to ensure a quality 3G experience for customers.
"Partnering with Vodafone will enable PS Vita users in the selected countries to always be connected with their PlayStation life, friends and games, wherever they are," he added.
Several games have already been confirmed as appearing on the handheld console, including multiplayer action role-playing title Dungeon Hunter: Alliance, crossover fighting game Street Fighter X Tekken and the music-based Michael Jackson: The Experience.
Vodafone is set to announce its data plans for the service in due course.
