Fibre optic broadband has been introduced to around 6,000 more homes and businesses in Bristol thanks to a rollout project by BT.

The service has gone live in the Westbury on Trym and Avonmouth areas of the city, with a number of others set to be upgraded in the coming weeks.

BT has estimated the project, which has seen a nationwide investment of £2.5 billion, will be completed by the end of spring 2014.

Chair of the West of England Local Enterprise Partnership Colin Skellett described the service as "vital" and explained the benefits that will be felt by local businesses cannot be underestimated.

He said: "If local businesses are to continue to thrive in a competitive environment, high-speed communication is essential. This technology has a vital role to play, helping businesses grow and generate more job opportunities."

It is thought around 137,000 properties in the Bristol area will have access to superfast speeds once the rollout scheme has installed all the required infrastructure.
