The Digital Region broadband network is set to be switched off later this summer.

When launched, it was hoped the Digital Region network - which aimed to deliver high-speed broadband to homes and businesses in South Yorkshire - would attract around 108,000 customers.

However, uptake has been poor, with only 3,000 local people taking advantage of its services, the Star reports.

In light of this, the Digital Region network will be officially switched off on 14 August 2014, unless a buyer comes forward to take it over.

Interested parties have had almost a year to do so, with no deal being reached and the estimated cost of keeping the project going being in the region of £95.8 million.

Digital Region's Richard Jepson hinted that someone could be "possibly taking it over" but did not reveal any further details.

The closure of the network has left locals frustrated, with many now set to be faced with inadequate loading speeds and no fibre connection.

Co-Director of a Sheffield business getting its broadband from Digital Region Mike Hull explained: "Because Digital Region was first in the city centre, there are no other superfast suppliers on our road, which is incredible in one of the country's biggest cities."
