3 Mobile sees 427% rise in data usage
Network operator 3 Mobile has revealed 97 per cent of traffic on its network now comprises data consumed by smartphone and mobile broadband customers.

According to the carrier, in the 14 months between June 2010 and September 2011, data usage over its infrastructure has risen by 427 per cent due to the growing popularity of streaming movies, downloading apps and accessing Facebook while on the move.

Phil Sheppard, director of network strategy at 3 Mobile, said when the service provider launched in the UK in 2003 the idea of 3G technology seemed "a bit Tomorrow's World".

"It was ahead of its time and few knew how 3G and mobile data could really be relevant in people's lives," he remarked.

However, Mr Sheppard stated the prevalence of dongles, smartphones and tablets means there is now "no denying the importance of a reliable, powerful network like ours".

After releasing the mobile broadband data figures, 3 Mobile announced the launch of a new portable Wi-Fi hub that allows up to five wireless-enabled devices to be connected to the web simultaneously via 3G signals.

ZTE's MF10 Dongle Adapter, which is compatible with almost all 3G dongles, is set to hit the market in the coming weeks, with release details and pricing information to be unveiled closer to the time.

The Wi-Fi hub also features an Ethernet socket that means it can function as a router for fixed-line broadband connections, the network operator explained.

David Kerrigan, head of mobile broadband at the carrier, commented: "The ZTE MF10 Dongle Adapter is a fantastic addition to 3 Mobile's range of mobile broadband devices, offering people the flexibility of being able to create a Wi-Fi hotspot."

The service provider is in the process of enhancing the mobile broadband experience enjoyed by its subscribers and is on track to upgrade 80 per cent of its network to HSPA+ technology by the end of the year.
