Scientists at Bangor University are working on a broadband service capable of delivering speeds that are 2,000 times as fast as current connections, but without a huge price hike.

The researchers are looking to boost the capacity of fibre optic broadband networks and the project - known as Ocean - has already achieved speeds of 20Gbps, reports the BBC.

Having delivered such high connection speeds, the team are now attempting to make their innovation commercially viable, with the backing of big-name technology firms such as Fujitsu Semiconductors Europe and optical fibre specialist Finisar Israel.

Dr Roger Giddings, one of the team running the Ocean initiative, said: "We hope to a have a working module at the end of the three-year project and we are one year into it at the moment."

The UK's fastest publicly available broadband service - offering speeds of 1.5Gbps - is delivered by Virgin Media, but can only be received in a small area of east London.

According to Ofcom, the national average broadband speed stood at 9Mbps in May.
