BBC fibre optic broadband scheme welcomed by MSP
The Highlands and Islands Conservative MSP Jamie McGrigor has welcomed news that his constituency is to receive super-fast broadband as part of a BBC rollout.

He said the scheme, announced this week in the chancellor of the Exchequer's Spending Review, was likely to be "truly transformational" to the area.

The politician explained: "A first-class broadband system is key to business growth and development in my region and especially in the remote rural and island communities of this part of the world."

He added that he is delighted with the £530 million scheme, which will see the BBC deliver fibre optic broadband to rural locations that would otherwise be without it.

In his address to the House of Commons in which he announced the plans, George Osborne said the broadband provision would support local businesses in the areas that receive it.

This in turn, he explained, would help make up the new economy he envisages for the UK.
