Superfast West Yorkshire has unveiled a new fibre optic connection in the market town of Wetherby.

Businesses in the area have long complained that slow broadband speeds are holding back their progress, while householders argue that poor infrastructure is lessening their quality of life.

Harewood councillor Matthew Robinson said that work will begin on connecting premises to the newly upgraded exchange centre between July and December, while other areas of the town will follow at the start of 2015.

"Fast, reliable internet access is something that has, in only a few years, become an essential requirement for homes and businesses, and [poor speeds] have been a continual cause for complaint," Mr Robinson said.

Gwen Rymill, head of the Boston Spa-based Smarter Business Process company, said that superfast broadband has become an absolutely necessary part of everyday life and should be developed as soon as possible so that West Yorkshire residents benefit.
