Broadband pilots confirmed for rural areas
Four rural areas will receive between £5 million and £10 million in funding as part of the government's super-fast broadband pilot scheme.
Cumbria, North Yorkshire, the Golden Valley in Herefordshire and the Highlands and Islands in Scotland are the locations that have been selected for the scheme.
In preparation for the £530 million investment in rural broadband infrastructure outlined in last week's comprehensive spending review, these places are set to benefit from connection speeds "only usually found in densely populated urban areas".
According to a statement published on Friday (October 22nd), each pilot will be allocated between £5 million and £10 million in funding to support the project.
The government said the scheme should help to "establish the commercial costs and challenges involved in rolling out super-fast broadband across the UK".
BT recently unveiled plans to install fibre optic broadband services for homes across Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, representing the biggest rural super-fast broadband project in the UK to date.
