BT has seen its suppliers to slash their carbon emissions within the first year of launching its Better Future Supplier Forum (BFSF).

Combined, companies throughout the telecoms giant's supply chain reduced their output of the greenhouse gas by 30,238 tonnes - equivalent to the annual carbon footprint of 2,000 people.

Across the manufacturing process, participants managed carbon savings of more than 7,000 tonnes.

Huawei and SGW Global, two companies that provide BT with electronic devices, have been presented with achievement awards for playing a key role in making BT's products and services more sustainable.

Erik Raphael, director of BT's consumer devices business, hailed the inaugural year of the BFSF as a "great success", with all suppliers that got involved displaying a full understanding of the "key principles of sustainability".

BT's chief sustainability officer Niall Dunne added: "By encouraging scrutiny of not only our own operations but those of our partners and suppliers, we're able to offer more sustainable products and services."
