BT urges patience over Shetlands broadband upgrade
BT's broadband customers in the Shetlands have been urged to be patient in the wait for high-speed access to be rolled out.

The telecoms giant upgraded its exchanges from 512Kb/s to 8Mb/s at the start of July 2010, but the Shetland News reports that some consumers are not yet able to benefit from the fastest download speeds.

In response to these concerns, BT has assured its broadband users that it can take "a few days" for the signal to stabilise once the infrastructure work has been completed.

A spokesperson from the company went on to point out that residents living in some parts of the Shetlands may not be able to take advantage of the full headline speed.

"Speeds of 'up to' 8Mbp/s are available but if someone lives a few kilometres from the exchange they might only get one or two Mbp/s," the source was quoted as saying.

Shetlands MSP Tavish Scott recently said the region would be the ideal location for a new high-speed broadband trial to take place.
