Culture Secretary hails progress of fibre broadband rollouts
The Culture Secretary has praised the progress of fibre optic broadband rollout projects all over the country, which are providing premises with access to the service at a faster rate than ever before.

Maria Miller claimed that an estimated "10,000 homes and businesses a week" are being connected to superfast speeds, enhancing users' ability to use services such as catch-up TV, live streaming and music downloads.

She attempted to highlight the huge range of people that stand to benefit from the technology, including school pupils, entrepreneurs, parents and medical patients.

However, the cabinet member did concede that more has to be done to seek out "alternative" arrangements that could be made to help connect the most rural areas of the UK - many of which have been excluded from commercial rollouts as they are not deemed to have the required population density.

She was speaking following the announcement of a new £10 million government fund that will be used to try out possible methods of bringing next-generation networks to rural spots.
