Cumbria residents introduced to fibre optic broadband
Residents from the Cumbrian town of Alston have been connected to fibre optic broadband thanks to a community project.
The town centre of Alson has now been connected to superfast speeds, after essential engineering work was carried out by social enterprise Cybermoor and service provider Virgin Media.
Homes and businesses covered by the project will now be able to enjoy speeds of around 25 Mbps, reports In-Cumbria.
Cybermoor Manager Danie Henry explained: "With families getting new smartphones, internet TVs and tablet computers for Christmas, the need for fast, reliable broadband has never been greater."
The fibre optic infrastructure that has been installed will serve the majority of homes in the area, with more scheduled to be connected over the coming weeks and months.
Cybermoor has been hailed as a perfect example of the benefits that can come from a community pulling together.
It comes amid widespread complaints that commercial rollouts being carried out by BT are excluding the UK's most rural areas, therefore disadvantaging them socially and economically.
