East Lothian Council hails super-fast broadband boost
East Lothian Council has welcomed plans from BT to significantly increase local levels of fibre optic broadband coverage.

By the end of spring 2014, the telecoms giant is aiming to boost super-fast broadband provision in the area by a further 800 homes and businesses through extra investment in communities that have already benefited from its £2.5 billion commercial rollout.

Cockenzie, Prestonpans and Tranent have been included in the deployment in East Lothian, where around 10,000 properties are already able to access the technology.

Councillor John McMillan, East Lothian Council's economic development and tourism spokesman, said it is "great news" that BT is expanding its fibre broadband network footprint in these three communities.

"It's essential to be well-connected if our businesses are to compete effectively and we are to protect and create jobs," he explained.

Under the commercial project, BT aims to bring fibre optic broadband within reach of two-thirds of UK properties once next spring has come to an end.
