Fibre broadband boost for Carlisle
Fibre optic broadband has been introduced to 1,300 more premises in Carlisle and the surrounding areas.
Properties in the city centre have been connected to the next-generation service, along with others in surrounding areas such as Linstock and Rickerby.
The infrastructure upgrade has been facilitated by service provider BT and Cumbria County Council, with the authority estimating that another 500 premises will be connected in the coming weeks.
Engineers' latest efforts have brought superfast technology to 11 more exchanges in the region and Cumbria County Council Cabinet Member for Economic Development David Southward revealed he was delighted by the project's progress.
He said: "The rollout is really gathering pace, with a series of new cabinets going live right across the county over the coming months - thanks to the significant investment through the Connecting Cumbria project.”
More areas will be introduced to fibre broadband in early 2014, with Barrow and Cockermouth scheduled to be the next beneficiaries.
