Fibre optic broadband boost for North Yorkshire
Fibre optic broadband access will be brought to 26,000 more premises in North Yorkshire if the region's county council can contribute the necessary funding.
If North Yorkshire County Council approves a plan to invest a further £3.1 million, along with £5 million from the the government's Broadband Delivery UK scheme and an EU grant, superfast coverage in the region will increase to 93 per cent.
However, according to the Bradford Telegraph and Argus, the council has been told it must cut back on £92 million of its budget in the next two years. It is considering plans to divert funding away from services, such as public transport and social care for the elderly, to facilitate the fibre broadband rollout.
Councillor Carl Les, who is the Deputy Leader of the authority, was keen to stress the importance of high-speed connectivity. He claimed the economic benefits the move would yield cannot be underestimated.
There has yet to be any decision regarding which areas of the region will be included, but those covered have been promised they will receive speeds of around 25Mbps.
