Fibre optic broadband subscriber numbers rise at Virgin Media
More than 4.2 million people are now signed up to one of Virgin Media's broadband packages.
Between April and June 2010, the service provider saw its broadband subscriber numbers reach 4.21 million, a rise of 28,100 on the first quarter of the year.
Of this total figure, more than 650,000 are taking advantage of Virgin Media's 20Mb and 50Mb fibre optic cable broadband offers - two of the fastest packages available in the UK.
The number of consumers on these top-end deals has jumped by 43 per cent year-on-year, while these people now represent almost a fifth of the company's overall broadband subscribers.
Some 74,000 customers were signed up to the 50Mb deal at the end of the second quarter.
In a bid to increase the availability of high-speed broadband in rural parts of the country, Virgin Media recently announced it will launch a trial initiative in Crumlin, south Wales.
From the start of August, residents will receive broadband via overhead electric cables.
