Government pledges will support South Yorkshire superfast broadband
The government will contribute £5 million towards boosting superfast broadband in South Yorkshire.
According to the Department of Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS), it would take a total investment of around £10 million to extend superfast coverage to 90 per cent of South Yorkshire.
Their estimate comes following the collapse of the Digital Region project after only managing to provide 80 per cent coverage, despite £155 million being ploughed into it.
The cash allocated by the coalition will be taken out of the budget for its Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK) scheme and given to local councils in Sheffield, Doncaster, Barnsley and Rotherham, which has helped install next-generation networks all over the country.
A DCMS spokesperson said: "BDUK has earmarked £5 million funding for a South Yorkshire project."
The official went on to say that BDUK expected to be capable of providing around half the funding for all other rollouts taking place nationwide.
