East Yorkshire broadband provider KC has kicked off a search for the region's oldest internet user as part of a national campaign aiming to get more people online.

The winner will be presented with £100 of online shopping vouchers and an Apple iPad on Friday (April 26th 2013), to mark this year's Silver Surfers' Day (SSD).

Of the eight million UK citizens who do not use the internet, 6.5 million are aged over 55, according to Digital Unite. SSD is designed to raise awareness of the benefits of broadband access among this group.

John Perkins of Age UK East Riding said many older citizens are already enjoying the advantages of being online, from saving money on shopping and bills to keeping in touch with friends and family.

But he stressed: "We know that some people are daunted by the idea of having to learn how to use a computer and because of this they're missing out on a world of opportunities."
