London boroughs fear broadband rollouts may hit road safety
London borough councils have warned they have "serious concerns" that broadband rollouts across the capital could have an adverse effect on road safety.

Government proposals aim to make it easier for internet service providers to install broadband equipment by removing the need for them to win planning permission from local authorities.

In their response to a consultation on the issue, London Councils - representing the city's 33 boroughs - warned that the move could endanger road users by reducing the number and size of pedestrian walkways, and obstructing lines of sight.

Furthermore, the organisation argued that costs are likely to be passed on to the councils themselves.

Chris Roberts, London Councils' executive member for planning, stressed that the body supports the rollout of broadband, but said this must not compromise the safety and attractiveness of streets.

"If the government is serious about localism, it should realise that greater, not lesser, planning powers are needed," he added.
