MEP criticises Shropshire fibre broadband rollout
An MEP from Shropshire has criticised the government's approach to rolling out fibre optic broadband in Shropshire.

Phil Bennion visited residents in the county who have become frustrated with the lack of information they have been given regarding when they can expect to be introduced to the next-generation service.

According to the Shropshire Star, he alluded to an increasing distance between the government's plans for its Broadband Delivery UK scheme and guidelines set by the European Commission.

Residents' concerns are largely based on a lack of progress in bringing superfast speeds to rural areas of the region that fall outside the 90 per cent coverage promised by service provider BT.

Mr Bennion explained that once all BT's commercial rollouts have been completed, the European Union will use its funding to upgrade the areas left out, but he admitted: "This can only happen properly once it is clear where the gaps will be."
