Mobile broadband is increasing in popularity around the world, new figures suggest.

Cellular and mobile broadband PC modem sales grew by more than 55 per cent in 2009, according to the latest data released by ABI Research.

More than 72 million such products - including USB models, PC card modems and wireless routers – were shipped last year, compared to 46.4 million in 2008.

"The USB modem continues to flourish. They remain amazingly popular," said senior analyst Jeff Orr.

"And at the end of 2009 there was a surge of consumer adoption," he added.

Mr Orr went on to say that the recession has "lengthened the equipment replacement cycle", meaning that global sales of embedded modems are not likely to surpass those of USB models within the next five years.

Leading broadband provider Orange recently suggested that mobile broadband services can help UK workers "reclaim the summer" this year, as they can enable them to work flexibly and cut down commuting times.
